A new voice-recognition search tool for the iPhone has problems understanding British accents, leading to some bizarre answers to spoken queries, reports say.
The free application, which allows iPhone owners to use the Google search engine with their voice, mistook the word iPhone variously for sex, Einstein and kitchen sink, said London’s Daily Telegraph.

Comments left by users on the application’s website seemed to confirm the problem.

“Awesome job google. Only problem is every time I say the word ‘fish’ it registers as ’sex’,” wrote one, identified as Kevin.

A video demonstration of the Google Mobile Application on the online giant’s website shows an American engineer successfully asking for pictures of the Golden Gate as well as cinema timetables and temperature conversions.

The website also includes a link to a video showing people with Irish, British and Chinese accents asking for relatively complicated searches, with apparent success.

But British iPhone owners had less luck when speaking the word iPhone into the application - a Scottish user was offered a porn website after it mistook his search for sex, the Telegraph reported.

A user from Surrey, south of London, had his request mistaken for MySpace and Einstein was another option offered for iPhone spoken with a Kent accent, it said.

The only British accent which correctly understood the request was for a user from Yorkshire, northern England, although he was also offered bonfire.

A Welsh accent gave the suggestions gorillas and kitchen sink.

“I’ve got a traditional Kentish accent and the thing kept on spitting back ridiculous things,” said Roger Ellinson, 26, from Maidstone in Kent, southeastern England.

“I asked it to find my nearest pizza take away and it came back with something about volcanoes,” he added.

“I asked it to find my nearest pub and it gave me a link to some kind of weird dating website,” said Ellinson. “I’ll have to try to put on my best American accent to get it to work.”

On its website, Google points out that the new voice search system “is currently available only in US English”.

Incase, creators of premium protective solutions, announced today a new product set to meet the growing power needs of iPhone 3G users. Available this holiday season, Power Slider is the first accessory of its kind to more than double the battery life of iPhone 3G while providing integrated sync and charge capabilities and complete device protection.

Power Slider features a low profile, complementary design and innovative functionality, serving as both a case and power solution. A custom engineered lithium-ion polymer battery with efficient circuitry was created for Power Slider to allow for a slim design and maximum power output. The optimized power management system provides continuous charge to the internal battery of iPhone 3G. When in use, power drains first from Power Slider so that the device’s internal battery remains fully charged and is only depleted once the battery of Power Slider has been drained.

“We developed Power Slider for the large and growing community of iPhone 3G users that utilize the device to its full extent as an all-in-one communication and entertainment tool and, as a result, find themselves in need of extended battery life,” states Erik Wahlstrom, President and CEO of Incase. “Power Slider more than doubles the battery life of iPhone 3G in the form of a hardshell protective case, in addition to allowing for syncing and charging without removing the device. These features create a seamless iPhone user experience that enable users to continue to take full advantage of the iPhone 3G as the platform continues to grow in its scope and utility.”

An integrated sync mode allows Power Slider users to easily sync and charge their devices while iPhone 3G is in Power Slider. A five-light LED battery status indicator gauges battery life and also denotes sync mode and charging. Included with every Power Slider is a custom USB 2.2 cable that allows for high capacity charging and data exchange for optimal charging and syncing. Additionally, Power Slider is compatible with all USB charging ports that provide 5V at 1A output.

Power Slider provides the best in hardshell protection and extended battery life for iPhone 3G. The design of Power Slider is an evolution of the Slider Case, one of the most popular iPhone cases by Incase. Power Slider maintains the durable, lightweight hardshell construction of the Slider Case and features soft-touch coating for added grip and durability.

Certified by the Apple(R) “Works with iPhone” program, Power Slider has been designed to connect specifically to iPhone 3G and meet Apple’s performance standards.

- Additional battery life provided by Power Slider
- Standby time: up to 330 hours
- Audio playback: up to 26 hours
- Talk time: up to 5 hours on 3G network and 10 hours on 2G network
- Video playback: up to 7 hours
- Internet use: up to 5 hours on 3G network and 6 hours on Wi-Fi

Power Slider will be available Holiday 2008 for a suggested retail price of $99.95 (US) through the Apple Store and Apple’s retail stores worldwide, and in the US through Best Buy Mobile and the Incase webstore (goincase.com).

Try this out… it’s not as good as in the promo video from Google, but then I am in an office with a few people around, but seriously, it’s got it wrong 8 times. I’m already getting annoyed with this app. Maybe I’m not american enough, seeing as the app has a disclaimer that says ‘works best with a Northern American English Accent’…!!!

It’s clever I suppose, maybe you’ll have more luck than me using this app.

The new Google Mobile App, is available TODAY on the iTunes App Store.

iPhone Dev Team have posted on their blog saying that 2.2 iPhone software MAY stop any future jailbreak UNLOCKS… the key word here is MAY stop it… They are not sure, but for them to even mention it, it must be a concern, so our suggestion is to wait for a few days after the update is released and see what the iPhone Dev Team say… Obviously, we’ll keep you all posted on the best course of action too… So check back on the 21st!

iPhone Dev Team’s blog post:

We’ve made some decent progress with the iPhone 3G, nothing worthy of a party as yet but we are moving along nicely, we’ll keep you updated on this.

Now for something a bit more serious, we’ve explained about Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device.

This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ on the iPhone 3G could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first!

Please don’t blindly install the update and then complain about it later

An upcoming game has piqued our interest. We could call it a Puzzloop clone, but its really quite different, and actually a lot more polished. Use your multiple cannons to match 3 balls or more at a time (in a Puzzloop style) however, you’ve got two cannons and it works quite well. We love the surround graphics, it’s really well designed, and much more reminiscent of a video game from a big console. It feels like a full game, and that, we feel is something lacking at the moment on the iPhone.

AT&T Mobility CED, Ralph De La Vega, has recently announced the arrival of the tethering plans for the iPhone. We all knew that AT&T has been working with Apple to bring an official tethering plan to iPhone customers, but no previous details have been leaked.

AT&T has always done their best to bring customers what they want in a cellular service, iPhone owners have been asking for a tethering plan for over a year not but AT&T could not deliver because of the network. Ralph De La Vega said, “Regardless of how many billions of dollars AT&T pours into their 3G network, it hasn’t been stable enough to handle all you iPhone users,” AT&T is simply worried as to how well the network will hold up to millions of users all jumping on at one time.

They have never has such an issue because there has never been such a huge rush in data use in their history. There is still no word on an official launch date. Here are the details on the iPhone tethering plans:

5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) - AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).

Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)

Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k - dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k - ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k - slow broadband.

You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.

Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in. Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.

For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.

No idea on a launch date.

At least they are developing this with Apple, so hopefully, this update will come in the form of a downloadable app from iTunes that will then be rolled out globally. [via macblogz]

Well it was only going to be a matter of time before someone hacked an existing external PDA keyboard to work with the iPhone. Clearly this is a beta piece of hardware, but we can see it works, so hopefully this is the start of a long line of keyboard based accessories for the iPhone.

* We’re dreaming of a HTC Touch style, slide out keyboard thingy… one day *

Clearly this is an app for those of you who have Jailbroken your iPhone, but the great news is, now you can torrent directly from your iPhone (probably best to do that in a wifi zone!) and then play the downloaded files direct in the dTunes player.

Well worth checking out if you love TV shows and movies and download using torrent software usually on your Mac or PC.

Using dTunes is very simple, just search for the song or artist you wish to listen to and select the option you wish to download or stream to your iPhone. All your downloaded items are saved directly to your iPhone and displayed in the home screen.

One drawback that we have noticed is the inability to load music directly to the dTunes library. Files are stored in the /var/mobile/Library/Downloads folder. After downloading or streaming media to your iPhone you can play it via the media player within dTunes. One feature that we love about dTunes is the ability to play music in the background while doing other things such as reading email. The default music download site is Seeqpod.com, and for video it is tinytube.net.

Torrents are downloaded through a sign up service called iTorrentReplay. dTunes also gives you the option to dim the screen while playing music with the press of a button, no more waiting for the screen to time out to save power. dTunes is currently ad funded, the ads however do not seem to get in the way.
The iPhone 3G overtook the RAZR during the third quarter of the year, according to market research firm NPD. This marks an end to the RAZR’s 3-year run in the top slot, falling to second place, followed by the BlackBerry Curve, LG Rumor and LG enV2.

“The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality”, said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD.

“Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features.”

Apple sure is taking the high road with the success of the iPhone. Once again Apple has beaten RIM and their Blackberry line in terms of reliability. Apple has managed to come out on top with two models when RIM has an entire collection of handsets.

In a study done by SquareTrade, out of 15,000 iPhone handsets, only 5.6 percent failed in the first year of use. Blackberry handsets failed 11.9 percent within the first year. Palm came in third with 16.2 percent failing in a 12-month period. Battery failure was also a lot better in the iPhone than in Blackberry and Palm handsets.

A third of the cause for failure came back to the touch screen. Another issue reported was the shape of the actual device, even though it is pretty thin, the phone seems a little wide causing people to drop it. “One year in, the data suggests that Apple’s first foray into the cell phone handset market has not been plagued by hardware problems, as some early reports suggested,” concluded the study. “Aside from exhibiting a relatively high rate of touchscreen failures, iPhones have not had significantly high malfunction rates in any of the areas we identified.”

Gym Technik is an innovative online service allowing you to use your smart phone as your workout journal. While you workout, Gym Technik tracks the weights, the reps, and your body stats all through your mobile smart phone.

Use your computer to access the Internet and organize your workout routines using our extensive exercises library. Define all your workouts online with each being the exercise routine you perform at the gym. When at the gym, login to Gym Technik using your mobile phone and pick from the list of your already defined workouts.

Simply start a workout and enter in the stats for each exercises performed. All your stats sync to your web account automatically allowing you to analyze your data with our informative progress charts and then allowing you to enhance your workout routines as necessary.

Any changes you make to your workout routines on the web are all automatically synced with your mobile smart phone login.

The system works really well, and whilst I was reticent about using a web app over an actual iPhone app, it works really well. I’ll definately be using it at the gym this week.

VERDICT: 84%

Now your iPhone can double as an Ocarina (to add to the plethora of other instruments that the iPhone can now ‘be’).

Smule have released Ocarina for iPhone today, and it looks pretty awesome.

Ocarina is the first true musical instrument created for the iPhone. Both experts and beginners will be amazed by this innovative player. Ocarina is sensitive to your breath, touch and movements, making it even more versatile than the original. Unlike other musical applications, there are no pre-compiled riffs so musicians will find unlimited opportunities for self-expression. Advanced options allow you to choose between diatonic, minor and harmonic scales. Or channel your favorite video game adventurer with Smule’s Zeldarian mode.

Also, like most Smule products, Ocarina is a social application. Tap on the globe icon and you will see and hear other Ocarina players throughout the world. The globe view will highlight the source of the music. Rate your favorite performances so that others may benefit from your judgment. Name your Ocarina if you want listeners around the world to identify your performances. With this robust application beautiful music is created, appreciated and shared.

Optimized for 3G phones; for first generation phones we recommend upgrading to the 2.2 firmware when it becomes available.

Get it on the App Store now

The Dutch developer Makayama released today iPresenter, an app that allows you to remote control your Powerpoint presentations wirelessly from your iPhone, with a realtime view of your slides. Show your slides on your PC and use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a clicker. iPresenter gives you full control. Move a slideshow forward and backward and jump to the last or first slide.

Best of all: you can watch a preview of the next slide or a live view of the current slide on the screen of the phone. You can talk to your audience without having to look behind you on the PC or projection screen. You may choose audio or vibration feedback, when pressing ‘next slide’ or no feedback at all.
