China Unicom is working with Apple to finally launch a Wi-Fi version of the iPhone, according to The Wall Street Journal. The iPhone hit China in October, but sans Wi-Fi. Chinese regulations had prohibited the sale of any Wi-Fi device that does not use the country’s own wireless standard known as WAPI (Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure). As a result, Apple was forced to introduce the iPhone with Wi-Fi disabled in order to enter the Chinese market without delays. Due to a relaxation of rules, devices sold in China can offer Wi-Fi as long as they also include WAPI. Speaking with reporters at the National People’s Congress, Unicom Chairman Chang Xiaobing said Saturday that the change in regulations has opened the door for a new iPhone with built-in Wi-Fi, the Journal reported.

He gave no specific launch date for the new phone but did say the company would try to compensate users of current iPhones that lack Wi-Fi, possibly by giving them greater access to the 3G network. iPhone sales in China have been brisk but likely restrained by a couple of factors. The phone sells for $730 to $1,020, according to the Journal, much higher than gray market smartphones and iPhone knockoffs. And without Wi-Fi, Chinese users have been forced to tap into expensive 3G connections. Unicom’s chairman acknowledged the high cost of iPhone ownership in his country and said his company will try to lower the cost if possible. China Unicom is currently the only carrier in that country to offer the iPhone, although Apple has conducted on-again, off-again talks with China Mobile.

China Unicom also indicated it will be selling Android-based smartphones. The launch of Android phones in China was postponed earlier this year due to strained relations between Google and the Chinese government.

Good news for all of you Foursquare addicts, after a couple days of noticed absence, the Foursquare iPhone app is now back on the App Store. Here is the story; Last week, Foursquare accidentally released to the App Store a new version of its app before it was totally ready. It was pulled shortly after, unfortunately, many users had already went through the update, and were left stuck with a non-functioning app. Well, Foursquare 1.6.1 is now back on the store, waiting for the redesigned 1.7 update which should appear in a few days.

Categories app is one of the most popular jailbreak iPhone apps. It helps you organize iPhone apps on your iPhone’s home screen. As the name suggests it allows you to create categories in the form of folders so that you can move the iPhone apps into them to reduce the number of home screens.

Developers of the jailbreak app have recently released a new version with revamped GUI and some new features. BigBoss, one of the developers of the jailbreak app writes:

It’s been slow going due to my lack of time lately, but I have revamped the Categories GUI making room for some future enhancements and adding some things to it. We (ashikase and I, mainly ashikase) have also added some internal clean up code which will help on cases where the conversion did not go well from an older version to the latest version.

A new version of Foursquare for the iPhone is on the way and it will feature a revamped interface, a brand new user tab, and a new checkin history view. This version of the app – v1.6 – should be heading to the App Store soon. Nick Starr shared screenshots of it with us and we’ve included a few below so that you can see some of the new features. Looking at the images from Foursquare 1.6, the first thing you’ll notice is that the interface has been totally revamped. The colors, icons and menu layout are all completely restyled and rearranged in a much more appealing manner.

For instance, check out the new Shout and User Profile pages. They look almost indistinguishable from their current iPhone counterparts:

There are also a few new features. For instance, users have a profile screen that contains checkin history and friends that is accessible directly from the menu at the bottom of the app.

Friends’ Checkins also now have a pull-down to refresh mechanism.

Friends info pages have also been completely redesigned and friend-by-friend ping control is much more attractive.

The new foursquare is scheduled to hit the App Store within a week, so keep checking your updates.

The iPhone 3GS application Layar has returned to the App Store after it was pulled in December to remedy some bugs. The Layar Reality Browser displays real time digital information on top of reality in the camera screen of the mobile phone. While looking through the phone’s camera lens, a user can see houses for sale, popular bars and shops, touristic information of the area, play a live game, etcetera.

The app was filled with issues on launch, and was ripped off the App Store. It’s back now so be sure to download or update your app ASAP

Fogtechnologies has announced the release of Snap + Map 1.0, their new app for the iPhone devices. Snap + Map is the first iPhone app to convert paper maps into GPS enabled maps. Users take a picture of a paper map (or download a map from the internet), set two snap points and Snap + Map displays their current location on the map. Renowned illustrator Kyle T. Webster took a detour in 2009 from illustrating for clients like The New Yorker, Time and The Wall Street Journal. He spent ten months designing and developing an iPhone game with the hopes that it would not only be a fun diversion for those who play it, but that it would also help them improve their powers of short term memory.

The new game, ‘White Lines,’ ($0.99) is designed for all ages, and asks players to redraw lines that travel across the screen in the same order and direction in which they originally appeared. In an effort to make the game stand out from the arcade-style games that are currently on the market, Webster designed the game in black and white with sparse graphical elements, thereby allowing players to concentrate fully on the gameplay.

The game begins with randomly generated sequences of two lines, and as players successfully complete 15 sequences, they advance to the next level, in which an additional line is added to each sequence. Overall, the game consists of nine levels and the ninth and final level contains sequences of 10 lines.

Webster, the creator of the game, theorizes that the later stages of the game (four lines and up) will stimulate the parts of the brain that are used for short term recall because the core game model makes use of the four basic elements required for such stimulation: concentration, repetition, pattern building, and information absorption.

Webster is currently reaching out to Wake Forest University Psychology Department professors to conduct further experiments with the game to see if it might be used as a fun, alternative tool in measuring test subjects’ ability to recall visual patterns.

Apple has apparently boosted the maximum size of an iPhone app download over 3G from 10 MB to 20 MB. Previously, users who wanted to download an app larger than 10 MB had to switch to a WiFi connection. The most obvious reason for the limit in the first place was likely to preserve bandwidth. However, many have speculate that Apple has made the change in anticipation of the iPad, which is set to debut in late March.

The thinking behind that is iPad application downloads will be larger than typical iPhone apps populating Apple’s App Store. Due to its 9.7-inch screen, iPad apps will have to support higher-resolutions graphics, especially for games. In the meantime, it appears iPhone users will be able to enjoy downloading larger apps while on the go using 3G.

The clever kids over at 9to5mac have figured out how to increase the level of security on your iPhone.

Here’s what they have to say: Today we’ve got something interesting for you security-minded folks with iPhones or iPod touches. You know how Apple only lets you use four numbers as your passcode to unlock your device?

That’s as weak as banks PINs and school lockers. Everyone knows you need at least six characters and alpha-numeric at that. We have your answer. We’ve built a profile from Apple’s corporate developement kit that allows alphanumeric passcodes. All you have to do is open this link (On your iDevice only!) and you will be prompted to pick a new passcode. You will be required to make a passcode with a mix of letters and numbers and you cannot put numbers in a consecutive order.

For example you cannot choose “max1234″ you would have to do something such as “max2746.” If you ever want to remove this feature simply go to Settings/General/Profiles/9to5mac/ then click remove and confirm. Then change your code back to something numeric. We aren’t responsible for you forgetting your passcode and locking yourself out of your iPhone. Or anything else. Use at your own risk.

Apple has changed MobileMe’s me.com site, previously inaccessible from iPhone or iPod touch Safari, to not only allow access to Find My iPhone, but to offer help in setting up accounts and getting additional apps. iTunes Preview, meanwhile, has duplicated even more of the media and app browsing experience on the web by adding support for categories.

First up, when you used to go to http://www.me.com on your iPhone, you used to see an intercept page telling you to set up the services on your iPhone and that was it. Now the new page (above) has a link to setting up those services, a direct link to Find my iPhone, and links for getting Apple’s free Gallery and iDisk App Store apps. Obviously, Find My iPhone from an iPhone or iPod touch (or iPad, as we presume that’s what Apple is setting all this up for) is the Big News here. The link itself is a bit clunky still and the Find My iPhone page hasn’t been optimized for the iPhone, but having it available online and mobile is huge.

A new iPhone and Android app has launched that takes government data on ASB statistics and presents it to consumers in an easy-to-consume map-based format. In other words, the ASBOrometer will tell you just how many Anti-Social Behaviour Orders have been handed out to your neighbours, or in other geographical areas.

“ASBOrometer measures levels of anti-social behaviour at your current location and gives you access to key local ASB statistics”, reads the official blurb for the app, currently available for free on the App Store with data good for England and Wales. Creator Jeff Gilfelt, 31, told The Telegraph: “Although its name is fun, it has a serious message”. Gilfelt sees the app as useful for house buyers who can get an idea of the scale of anti-social problems in any given area.

Apple is removing Apps from the App Store that are “overtly sexual”. Apple claims they do this because they get numerous of complaints about sexual content in the App Store. “Wobble iBoobs” got removed from the App Store this week because of the new guidelines Apple introduced. Wobble iBoobs has no sexual content in and of itself, it just applies a “wobble” graphical effects to any photo you choose, Wobble has already been downloaded 970.000 times.

Appadvice write: When Apple announced Push Notifications a year ago, one of the most interesting prospects for it was probably Instant Messaging. One of developers called up to demonstrate it during the event was Meebo and hell we’ve been waiting for what they showed us back then. Meebo, better known for its web platform, is a multi-protocol instant messaging client, in non-nerd talk, it’s a program/web service that allows you to chat with your buddies who use MSN, AIM or Facebook, at the same time and in the same place. Almost a 100 million users already use their online service, and last year in March they announced a native app for it, well there it is. Alright, there are plenty of applications who allow you to chat on multiple networks, I compared them all last month but they all tend to have some kind of issue. Some of them are bulky, others are expensive and so on. Meebo’s native app is different however, it’s free, damn fast, includes Push Notifications and lets you access over a 100+ networks. I gave it a spin this afternoon and it really seems to be the one IM app to rule them all.

Remember the great “Square” payment system that will let pretty much anybody process credit card payments using their iPhone and a dongle? Well, it’s around the corner, and we just got some updates about the pricing. The app that makes it function will cost you just $1 and the dongle is included. The transaction fee is a very standard 2.9% and it works with any bank account.
