Mobispine, the developer of iPhone app, RSS News Reader has announced that they have developed an iPhone app which will bring the much awaited MMS feature to the iPhone. Mobispine is offering a white-labeling solution to carriers where they will brand their true MMS application for each carrier and distribute it via the App Store so that they can deliver the MMS feature to their iPhone customers. A new voice-recognition search tool for the iPhone has problems understanding British accents, leading to some bizarre answers to spoken queries, reports say.

The free application, which allows iPhone owners to use the Google search engine with their voice, mistook the word iPhone variously for sex, Einstein and kitchen sink, said London’s Daily Telegraph.

Comments left by users on the application’s website seemed to confirm the problem.

“Awesome job google. Only problem is every time I say the word ‘fish’ it registers as ’sex’,” wrote one, identified as Kevin.

A video demonstration of the Google Mobile Application on the online giant’s website shows an American engineer successfully asking for pictures of the Golden Gate as well as cinema timetables and temperature conversions.

The website also includes a link to a video showing people with Irish, British and Chinese accents asking for relatively complicated searches, with apparent success.

But British iPhone owners had less luck when speaking the word iPhone into the application - a Scottish user was offered a porn website after it mistook his search for sex, the Telegraph reported.

A user from Surrey, south of London, had his request mistaken for MySpace and Einstein was another option offered for iPhone spoken with a Kent accent, it said.

The only British accent which correctly understood the request was for a user from Yorkshire, northern England, although he was also offered bonfire.

A Welsh accent gave the suggestions gorillas and kitchen sink.

“I’ve got a traditional Kentish accent and the thing kept on spitting back ridiculous things,” said Roger Ellinson, 26, from Maidstone in Kent, southeastern England.

“I asked it to find my nearest pizza take away and it came back with something about volcanoes,” he added.

“I asked it to find my nearest pub and it gave me a link to some kind of weird dating website,” said Ellinson. “I’ll have to try to put on my best American accent to get it to work.”

On its website, Google points out that the new voice search system “is currently available only in US English”.

Try this out… it’s not as good as in the promo video from Google, but then I am in an office with a few people around, but seriously, it’s got it wrong 8 times. I’m already getting annoyed with this app. Maybe I’m not american enough, seeing as the app has a disclaimer that says ‘works best with a Northern American English Accent’…!!!

It’s clever I suppose, maybe you’ll have more luck than me using this app.

iPhone Dev Team have posted on their blog saying that 2.2 iPhone software MAY stop any future jailbreak UNLOCKS… the key word here is MAY stop it… They are not sure, but for them to even mention it, it must be a concern, so our suggestion is to wait for a few days after the update is released and see what the iPhone Dev Team say… Obviously, we’ll keep you all posted on the best course of action too… So check back on the 21st!

An upcoming game has piqued our interest. We could call it a Puzzloop clone, but its really quite different, and actually a lot more polished. Use your multiple cannons to match 3 balls or more at a time (in a Puzzloop style) however, you’ve got two cannons and it works quite well. We love the surround graphics, it’s really well designed, and much more reminiscent of a video game from a big console. It feels like a full game, and that, we feel is something lacking at the moment on the iPhone.

It looks like Apple’s new in-ear headset will begin shipping any day now, according to what Macrumors is reporting. Yesterday Apple end-of-life’d the old headphones which simply means they will no longer be shipping them to resellers and when that happens, it generally means the new product is on it’s way.

AT&T Mobility CED, Ralph De La Vega, has recently announced the arrival of the tethering plans for the iPhone. We all knew that AT&T has been working with Apple to bring an official tethering plan to iPhone customers, but no previous details have been leaked.

AT&T has always done their best to bring customers what they want in a cellular service, iPhone owners have been asking for a tethering plan for over a year not but AT&T could not deliver because of the network. Ralph De La Vega said, “Regardless of how many billions of dollars AT&T pours into their 3G network, it hasn’t been stable enough to handle all you iPhone users,” AT&T is simply worried as to how well the network will hold up to millions of users all jumping on at one time.

They have never has such an issue because there has never been such a huge rush in data use in their history. There is still no word on an official launch date. Here are the details on the iPhone tethering plans:

• 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) - AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
• Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)
• Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k - dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k - ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k - slow broadband.
• You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.
• Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in. Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.
• For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.
• No idea on a launch date.

At least they are developing this with Apple, so hopefully, this update will come in the form of a downloadable app from iTunes that will then be rolled out globally. [via macblogz]

Rumour has it that the iPhone update we’ve been talking about for a while now, is slated to drop on the 22nd of November. To recap, iPhone 2.2 is the version with:

• Street View in Google Maps
• App Rating on Deletion
• Downloadable Podcasts direct from the iPhone
• Location attaching to emails
• Redesigned Safari Browser
• PLUS: It’s jailbreakable (unofficially!)

Well it was only going to be a matter of time before someone hacked an existing external PDA keyboard to work with the iPhone. Clearly this is a beta piece of hardware, but we can see it works, so hopefully this is the start of a long line of keyboard based accessories for the iPhone.

Clearly this is an app for those of you who have Jailbroken your iPhone, but the great news is, now you can torrent directly from your iPhone (probably best to do that in a wifi zone!) and then play the downloaded files direct in the dTunes player.

Well worth checking out if you love TV shows and movies and download using torrent software usually on your Mac or PC.

Using dTunes is very simple, just search for the song or artist you wish to listen to and select the option you wish to download or stream to your iPhone. All your downloaded items are saved directly to your iPhone and displayed in the home screen.

One drawback that we have noticed is the inability to load music directly to the dTunes library. Files are stored in the /var/mobile/Library/Downloads folder. After downloading or streaming media to your iPhone you can play it via the media player within dTunes. One feature that we love about dTunes is the ability to play music in the background while doing other things such as reading email. The default music download site is Seeqpod.com, and for video it is tinytube.net.

Torrents are downloaded through a sign up service called iTorrentReplay. dTunes also gives you the option to dim the screen while playing music with the press of a button, no more waiting for the screen to time out to save power. dTunes is currently ad funded, the ads however do not seem to get in the way. Users select a contact from their Address Book, pick one of his or her phone numbers, and by taking advantage of Apple Web Clips technology, put the icon on their home screen.

It is also possible to use a picture from the photo library or take a new snapshot with iPhone’s camera.

[pocketlint] Apple’s iPhone 3G has “dethroned” the Motorola RAZR as the leading handset purchased by adult consumers in the US.

The iPhone 3G overtook the RAZR during the third quarter of the year, according to market research firm NPD. This marks an end to the RAZR’s 3-year run in the top slot, falling to second place, followed by the BlackBerry Curve, LG Rumor and LG enV2.

“The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality”, said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD.

“Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features.”

The Dutch developer Makayama released today iPresenter, an app that allows you to remote control your Powerpoint presentations wirelessly from your iPhone, with a realtime view of your slides. Show your slides on your PC and use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a clicker. iPresenter gives you full control. Move a slideshow forward and backward and jump to the last or first slide.

Best of all: you can watch a preview of the next slide or a live view of the current slide on the screen of the phone. You can talk to your audience without having to look behind you on the PC or projection screen. You may choose audio or vibration feedback, when pressing ‘next slide’ or no feedback at all.
