Yellowsn0w is here!!!

Thanks to the amazing efforts of the iPhone Dev Team, we are pleased to announce that a REAL unlock solution is now available for all iPhone 3G’s called Yellowsn0w.

Contrary to all advice and rumours in the past, this unlock will only work, if you have the LATEST version of the Modem Firmware 02.28.00. So you may need to update your iPhone to the latest software if you are not on the latest version, and then jailbreak it with QuickPwn first. However this is GREAT NEWS because it means EVERYONE can now unlock their iPhone to any network.

Now the games really begin…

*Yes, you will need to already have a jailbroken iPhone, you can jailbreak your iPhone with QuickPwn in literally 5 minutes with no dramas.

Things to note about Yellowsnow from iPhone Dev Team…

• The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
• The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
• You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
• yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

Gizmodo reports: Why is this useful? It will give you the ability to run full Windows apps in your iPhone over the network. According to Citrix, you will have full Windows capability, including cut and paste inside Windows. And while this is not the first remote screen application available for the iPhone, it is the first one which is actually supported by a big company, which will make corporations happy.

iMobileCinema is a MobileSafari plugin which allows for playback of Flash (flv) video on the iPhone. You can watch videos from podcast sites or blogs with it; such as, Google Video, Youtube, and others.

A beta version of iMobileCinema has just been released for 2.x iPhones and can be installed via Cydia. You will need to add the d.imobilecinema.com source first. [iClarified]

This works for Jailbroken iPhones…

Simply open Cydia and find the Emoji Iconset Hack. Once installed, go to your Settings on your iPhone and find the Keyboard section. Click International Keyboards. Select Japanese and then ONLY turn on Emoji.

Now when you write email or SMS you have an extra button on your keyboard that will open the Emoji Section and give access to literally hundreds of awesome icons. However in our initial test, the icons don’t appear on other iPhones NOT running 2.2, and emailing these icons doesn’t actually appear on PC’s or Mac’s (even running Mobile Me), so I’m not quite sure how cool this hack is! But hey… I love these icons!

AT&T Mobility CED, Ralph De La Vega, has recently announced the arrival of the tethering plans for the iPhone. We all knew that AT&T has been working with Apple to bring an official tethering plan to iPhone customers, but no previous details have been leaked.

AT&T has always done their best to bring customers what they want in a cellular service, iPhone owners have been asking for a tethering plan for over a year not but AT&T could not deliver because of the network. Ralph De La Vega said, “Regardless of how many billions of dollars AT&T pours into their 3G network, it hasn’t been stable enough to handle all you iPhone users,” AT&T is simply worried as to how well the network will hold up to millions of users all jumping on at one time.

They have never has such an issue because there has never been such a huge rush in data use in their history. There is still no word on an official launch date. Here are the details on the iPhone tethering plans:

• 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) - AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
• Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)
• Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k - dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k - ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k - slow broadband.
• You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.
• Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in. Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.
• For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.
• No idea on a launch date.

At least they are developing this with Apple, so hopefully, this update will come in the form of a downloadable app from iTunes that will then be rolled out globally. [via macblogz]

Clearly this is an app for those of you who have Jailbroken your iPhone, but the great news is, now you can torrent directly from your iPhone (probably best to do that in a wifi zone!) and then play the downloaded files direct in the dTunes player.

Well worth checking out if you love TV shows and movies and download using torrent software usually on your Mac or PC.

Using dTunes is very simple, just search for the song or artist you wish to listen to and select the option you wish to download or stream to your iPhone. All your downloaded items are saved directly to your iPhone and displayed in the home screen.

One drawback that we have noticed is the inability to load music directly to the dTunes library. Files are stored in the /var/mobile/Library/Downloads folder. After downloading or streaming media to your iPhone you can play it via the media player within dTunes. One feature that we love about dTunes is the ability to play music in the background while doing other things such as reading email. The default music download site is Seeqpod.com, and for video it is tinytube.net.

Torrents are downloaded through a sign up service called iTorrentReplay. dTunes also gives you the option to dim the screen while playing music with the press of a button, no more waiting for the screen to time out to save power. dTunes is currently ad funded, the ads however do not seem to get in the way. AT&T have finally launched their free Wi-Fi that was promised oh so long ago.

Simply head in to any participating Wi-Fi hotspot (for example Starbucks) and connect to the Wi-Fi as you usually would.

Fire up safari, and you’ll be asked to enter your mobile number, this will then trigger a text message from AT&T telling you that you’ve got 24 hours of access until your cookie expires. Our guess is that they are logging your MAC address or mobile number which needs renewing every 24 hours to monitor usage even though they offer ‘unlimited’ usage.

Either way, its a great way to stay connected when you are in the city, without using up your data bundle. It comes not a moment too soon either, especially with the onset of Over the Air Podcast downloads coming in iPhone 2.2.

In this review we look at the Camera on the iPhone (2 megapixel) which is possibly one of the most expensive phones on the market, compared with a standard Sony Ericsson Cybershot K810i (3.2 megapixel) and a Nokia 6110 Navigator (2 megapixel). BOTH mobile phones are at least 18 months old, and are Nokia and Sony Ericsson’s ‘average’ phones of 2006/2007…

One point to note is that these phones do have automatic flashes (unlike the iPhone!!!)

Test 1 - Indoor Office Shot

The iPhone is terrible at shooting anything backlit, the lack of fill in flash means that the overall balance that the camera applies to the image is usually wrong. In this test, the same thing occured, whilst it tried to balance against the bright window it left the main darker area of the bean bags dull and grainy. The Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones performed better, with the Nokia bleaching out the entire window in favour of the closer content, whilst the Sony Ericsson handled the image in the best way, leaving the background and the foreground visible nicely.

Winner: Sony Ericsson

Conclusion

With all these shots we were holding the camera extremely still each time, and still we were disappointed with the results of the iPhone.

The Nokia and the Sony Ericsson clearly outshone the iPhone, lets hope that Apple implement autofocus and some sort of flash before the next iPhone is released. If you want an iPhone as a phone/iPod/Camera replacement, we suggest still taking your camera out with you… You’ll be disappointed most of the time other wise.

The iPhone headphone socket has a little contact switch inside it that tells the iPhone to switch from external audio to headphones audio when plugged in. Sometimes this can get some dust or fluff underneath the contact and the iPhone or iPhone 3G can get jammed in headphones mode.

To cure this, one suggestion from Apple Technicians is to insert and retract the headphone jack a few times to dislodge the dust or fluff and clear the contacts in the iPhone.

Be gentle, you don’t want to break your iPhone or Headphones.

Simply hold down the HOME key when inside the chosen app, and it will switch back to the Springboard whilst keeping open the previous application.

Ironically, this only works with Official apps from the App Store, even though it itself is an app that requires a jailbroken iPhone.

Get the app from Cydia today. It’ll kill your battery, but its very useful!

We love this little hack.

1. install OpenSSH and set up Cyberduck on your computer. Don’t know how? See after the jump.
2. Navigate to “/System/Library/Fonts/Cache/”.
3. Replace Helvetica.ttf and HelveticaBold.ttf with the files downloaded from here.

The glove sports metal dots, placed on the cloth covering the fingertips, that replicates “capacitive touch” technology, mimicking the electron flow of human skin and making them touchscreen sensitive.

Previous solutions to the iPhone-glove dilemma have been, not so great, to say the least.

Set up iPhone for manually managing content:

1. Connect iPhone to your computer.
2. In iTunes, select iPhone in the sidebar.
3. Click the Summary tab and select “Manually manage music and videos.”
4. Click Apply.

Add items to iPhone: Drag a song, video, podcast, or playlist in your iTunes library to iPhone (in the sidebar). Shift-click or Command-click to select multiple items to add at the same time.
iTunes syncs the content immediately. If you deselect “Manually manage music and videos,” the content you added manually is removed from iPhone the next time iTunes syncs content.

Remove items from iPhone: With iPhone connected to your computer, select the iPhone icon in the iTunes sidebar. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the icon to show the contents. Select a content area, such as Music or Movies, then select the items you want to delete and press the Delete key on the keyboard.
Removing an item from iPhone doesn’t delete it from your iTunes library.

If you delete an item from iTunes, it will also be deleted from iPhone the next time you sync.

First off PocketMac offers a two-way sync with Entourage, Lotus Notes and Meeting Maker data. This syncing option covers both calendar and contacts as well as offering the ability to select either all or just cerrtain categories.

In addition PocketMac also allows you to make complete backups of your call logs and your text messages. You even have the option to export this data and save it as an Excel or CSV file, which can then be stored either locally on your Mac or on your iDisk.

Finally PocketMac also offers the ability to export any 411 information directly into your address book. When using 411 with AT&T you currently have the option to get that information sent by text message, PocketMac can take that text message and export the data into your Address Book with just one click.

While this is not going to replace your iTunes sync, unless of course you are not syncing any media, PocketMac does offer some nice perks and could be a valuable tool either by itself or in addition to the regular iTunes sync. PocketMac for the iPhone is currently available and retails for $29.95. It is Mac only and requires OS X 10.5 for use, it does however work with either the original iPhone as well as the iPhone 3G.”

That you can keep your data super safe with version 2.1 of the software.

Now, when you set a passcode lock you have the option to erase ALL DATA on the iPhone if the passcode is entered incorrectly 10 times. This is a very handy feature and protects all that valuable data on your iPhone in the event of a loss.

• It does NOT support the unlocking of iPhone 3G
• It does NOT support the jailbreaking of second generation iPod Touch introduced last week

It will jailbreak perfectly, but on restarting you’ll have no signal on your iPhone. The reason for this is that iTunes wants to activate the iPhone itself and jailbreaking already activates the phone for you, thus causing a bit of a conflict.

SOLUTION to Activate iPhone 3G using 2.1 Software with Jailbreak:

1. Simply go to ‘EXPERT MODE‘ when jailbreaking
2. UNTICK ‘Activate iPhone‘ in the settings
3. Remake the IPSW file
4. Restore your iPhone 3G with the NEW IPSW file
5. the iPhone 3G will now be jailbroken but NOT activated via the jailbreak hack
6. Open iTunes and it will activate the iPhone ‘officially’ checking your IMEI number against the iTunes database
7. SUCCESS enjoy your iPhone with Jailbreak

Let’s be honest, the selection of headsets with microphones for the iPhone are very limited, and if like myself, you don’t like in ear headphones, then you’re pretty much down to 3 or 4 good headsets, all over $300 each.

“Currently, we’re using the brilliant $199 Bose On Ear Headphones available from the Apple Store. The only thing that would make this microphone flawless would be the addition of a volume control. Hopefully Apple will add this iPod Touch feature to the iPhone in the next update.

Yes folks, the iPhone officially works and we’ve not had a crash all weekend.

Thanks to 2.1, we don’t spend an hour backing up every time we sync now, its far zippier and there are some small aesthetic tweaks which we’ll let you discover over time.

As far as 3rd party Apps. Well, we’ve not had any problems yet, and we have over 30 apps installed, however we have heard of reports that some apps are crashing in 2.1. If this is the case, developers will be working on this as we speak, so give it a few days for updates to reveal themselves.

All in all, I personally would chose a virgin iPhone on 2.1 than a jailbroken 2.0, and that’s saying something!

The long answer: No, but kinda yes… Purchase select episodes of your favorite TV shows in high definition for just $2.99. Or get the whole season in HD with a Season Pass. And when you buy HD, iTunes doubles your viewing pleasure: You also get an iPod-ready version with a file size and resolution that’s ideal for smaller screens.

Note this will not jailbreak earlier firmware versions and will change the baseband apparently. It is currently available as a torrent and can be downloaded from here.

After all the fuss we’ve heard about AT&T kicking up a fuss about tethering and VOIP and Skype style apps on the iPhone, we’re quite surprised/happy to see this on the App Store; VOIP for the iPhone using the TruPhone VOIP service, which is actually not bad.

You buy credit, and then simply use TruPhone to dial out using the WiFi network anywhere in the world. This app ONLY works on WiFi (probably just to keep the networks happy) but it does mean two things…

1. You can use VOIP on your iPhone at home on your WiFi.
2. You can call anywhere in the world from your iPhone at great rates over WiFi
3. You can use your iPhone anywhere in the world (where you are connected with WiFi and get no roaming charges

Well, not quite OFF and ON, but according to a number of sources, if you’re 3G signal is bad or non existent, try Turning Airplane Mode on and off again, this seems to reset all comms on the iPhone 3G and you should be back on the 3G train… hopefully.
