GPS comes to iPhone 2G and iPod Touch

Iclarified reports: The iGPS360 module is a state-of-the-art GPS module that brings GPS capability to the iPhone and iPod Touch. - The module is designed as a direct plug-in for your iPhone (both first generation and 3G) and iPod Touch (the module will not work on other iPod platforms or Apple devices). We also expect the module to work on the second generation iPod Touch once it has been jailbroken. - The module has on-board battery back-up which will store the last acquired GPS satellite information on-board, enabling a fast GPS-lock re-acquisition time after the module has temporarily been switched off.

Trapster, avoid speed cameras with your iPhone

[from iclarified] Trapster for iPhone alerts you as you approach police speed traps, red light cameras, and other kinds of traps.

It’s a high tech wayto do the same thing people have been doing for years with CB radios and flashing headlights at other drivers to warn them of a speed trap ahead. It works using the GPS and WiFi location capabilities of your iPhone 3G.

As you approach a trap an alert sound with play, according to the type of trap (for example “Live Police!”). You can report traps that you see by simply tapping the screen. You can also rate the traps that other users report. The system learns the credibility ofusers over time based on how many other users agree with the traps they report.

It’s FREE, and might save you a lot time, embarrassment, and money spent of traffic violation fees and increased insurance premiums. Download it now and give it a try!

Today we took the iPhone 3G out on the road, to test the GPS with google maps. In this test we genuinely needed the GPS as we had no idea where we were heading.

We set the maps to satellite view so we could see landmarks to aid navigation.

We connected to a mobile 3G network using Optus and had strong signal for most of the journey however even at 40 or 50kph the iPhone couldn’t stream the maps in quick enough which meant we kept having to stop and let the iPhone load more maps before proceeding on.

The GPS on the iPhone gets a lock faster than any other portable satnav device we’ve tried, but after testing it with google maps, our conclusion is that for sat navigation on the iphone to work well, someone like tom tom will have to release software that stores all the maps locally on the iPhone so you won’t need to rely on the 3G connection for the maps.

VERDICT: 75% - great for pedestrians

Tom Tom coming to iPhone, but will it work…?

Tomtom-iphone.jpgWe’re all waiting for TomTom to be released for iPhone, but the question that is on everyones lips is will it actually work.

The iPhone’s GPS receiver is so tiny (read: inaccurate) compared to dedicated in car units, that it’s really going to struggle to give accurate turn by turn directions for most users.

I guess we’ll have to keep a close eye on TomTom for iPhone til launch.

NavNGo have announced plans to release their iGO MyWay 8 SatNav software for the iPhone. It was either use the gomite LogoGPS hardware module to provide the GPS data, or will use their WiFi GPS unit, which allows the iPhone to pick up the location information via WiFi (allowing the GPS unit to be hidden and hardwired into a car, for example). NavNGo already provide a similar solution as part of the Sony PSP solution, so are well used to working on a variety of platforms. Although this has been announced in advance of the iPhone SDK (rumoured for announcement later today), it’s likely to be using the SDK, and may even feature as an example of an approved 3rd party application in Apple’s presentation.
