To manually set up your iPhone to act as a modem is simple.
Download a mobile update for iPhone Tethering from here and simply email this file to yourself and then click it on your iPhone, it will activate internet tethering immediately, and then you will be able to connect your iPhone as a modem with either a USB cable or via Bluetooth.

Sound easy but it’s a bit more complicated. Should really post some details on how to setup the tethered computer. No so simple!!!

It was more or less that simple for me, although for some reason the script didn’t install correctly the first time. Just follow the instructions on the Tether Me! Website, which adds a new item in network settings (Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering) … the rest of the instructions are right there. Works like a charm (via USB anyway — I didn’t try Bluetooth).
I only used it for a few minutes to see if it would work — I’m on AT&T and a little worried about being busted tethering. I guess I’ll keep it installed, should an emergency internet need arise, but I don’t think I’m going to be using this on the regular.

I’m sure tethering will work fine with the hack above. Question is, does anybody know if Optus can know the difference between data usage on a Paid Tethering plan vs non-paid.
I have seen an Optus disclaimer stating tethering outside of the Data plan will be charged at the additional data rate – not the capped data usage.
Your bills should arrive shortly – I’m sure someone will find out.

Ok this is a little strange cuz how did that do that? I don’t understand. I thought you weren’t allowed to install things from safari. Can AT&T find out about this? And is there a charge? I just installed this cuz I was curious but am not going to use it.

This absolutely will not work for me.
I downloaded the file as listed, did everything, but iPhone tethering isn't showing up in my network.
Help please?
