Internet tethering on the iPhone is very simple to set up on the new iPhone 3.0 software. We’ve been running tests for the past few days on Optus in Australia. Test results can be seen above (please note: test run on an iPhone 3G, not a 3GS)

Overall, the tethering is very reliable, and stable, and is certainly going to change the way people connect with their laptops in the coming months. Expect to see lots of businesses giving iPhones with tethering to staff rather than the usual USB 3G modem dongles.

This feature is a welcome addition to what is already an amazingly full featured mobile Operating System.

Average download speeds on iPhone 3G – 1.69Mb/sec

Average upload speeds on iPhone 3G – 0.35Mb/sec

Downloading screenshot below from the internet using iPhone 3G on 3.0 with internet tethering. You can see its quite a useable speed internet connection, and this is only going to get faster when the iPhone 3GS launches.
