Excellent list, anything about the Mail app

Can you now create html emails?
Different signatures for each email account?
Universal Inbox for all email accounts?

  2. cantwait Says:

Excellent. can’t find a list like this anywhere else. Any idea what time the upgrade will be available on 6/17?

  3. jemz Says:

Does anyone know how to download this for the phone?

  4. Kevin Says:

Jemz. to get the update, plug your iphone into your computer via USB wire, open iTunes, under Devices, click on your iPhone once it connects, make sure it is under the Summery tab, and click “check for update”. It should be simple to work your way through after that.

  5. sarah Says:

great have not saw a list like this any where, really helpfull, but when i conect my phone and click check for updates it says its up to date? :S any help?

  6. frank Says:

    Nice list, thanks!
Just one thing: #35 “Shake to undo what you have typed” seems to be a duplicate of #3 “Shake to undo/redo typing”…

  7. Graham Charles Says:

Here’s a feature that was inexplicably removed: you can no longer shuffle podcasts.

  8. William Says:

What about the fact that you no longer have the ability to start a slideshow of photos from any photo other than the first

  9. Andre Says:

I’ve downloaded the new iphone 3.0 software for my 2nd generation iphone 3G, however, I do not see an option for MMS (can’t fwd txt, can’t snd pics via txt). All previous indiations were this update would not work for 1st generation iphone, but it should work for the 2nd generation iphone. Does anyone know how to make this work?

  10. Andre Says:

…and oh yes, thanks for this handy list…i’ve just fwd to several ppl. there were several items here that were not listed on other blogs.

  11. john Says:

    hi sarah…..
make sure boys and girls that you have the latest itunes update…its 8.2 …without this will not be given the option to upgrade phone to 3.0
    hope this helps yall

  12. Phil Says:

    Also-

Phone number entered in Notes can be clicked and dialed

Address entered in Notes opens in maps when clicked

  13. Damien Says:

Andre, MMS will not be released on AT&T until later this year. I believe there is some hack you can do to enable it, but as I only have an iPod touch 2gen, I’m not concerned.

    Good Luck!

  14. Arstus Says:

@Andre – If you’re in the US, AT&T isn’t “ready” for the MMS feature so it’ll be available later in the year. If you’re in the UK (O2), you need to activate MMS support (text “MMS” to 1010, can take up to 24 hours to activate). Activation might be a requirement in other countries or on other networks, best check your networks website or contact customer services for the lowdown.

  15. SkillyMan Says:

Three clicks on the headset goes back a track when playing music on the iPod (On my Skullcandy Headphones but should work on offical iPhone headphones)

  16. sknob Says:

The 3GS earphones are like the new shuffle earphones (vol + and + controls). A long clic on center button brings up Voice control !

  17. Mark Says:

    Two other features:

-Exchange support – can sync both Exchange and local contacts
-Exchange support – can sync both Exchange and local calendars

  18. voidref Says:

Turning on Contacts Sync with MobileMe now gives the option to merge contacts instead of just replacing them all.

  19. Wacko Says:

You can also enter streat view in maps for current location. Before you needed to drop a red pin for the option. Looks like they tidied up a lot of tiny details that make the overall experience much better.

  20. Christopher Says:

I have another to add to the list:
    - The volume meter no longer shows up while playing music when plugged into a line-out component through the dock connector (i.e. into a speaker dock, or with the Apple Component AV cable)

  21. Dysan819 Says:

    Good list. Thanks!
You have a couple of duplicates and at least one (#112) that was a feature of 2.2.1.

  22. tony Says:

Majority of these “new” features for the IPhone are STANDARD with any Blackberry!

  23. Phil Says:

Thanks for the list. #52 doesn’t work for me though over 3G. I still get the popup on podcasts over 10 mb saying I need to be on wifi or connected to a computer to download.

  24. Palm pre Says:

Wow with all these great feature I hope the battery last for more then 1 hour.

  25. Scott Says:

Andre, AT&T will has not supported MMS yet. I heard as soon as AT&T supports it there will another minor update to enable the functionality.

  26. mike Says:

    112. A hard reset on your phone (holding sleep and home for 10 seconds) now turns it off instead of restarting it.
How is this a feature. You guys turn one feature into many, ex: unviersal search into mail search, notes search, etc.

  27. Rick Smith Says:

This list says you can download any size podcast regardless of there size over 3g. This is not correct. Podcasts sill have the 10mb cap for 3g download.

  28. Adam Says:

How about how when you dock your iPod (or I assume iPhone) into a radio/set of speakers. The volume bar disappears. That makes sense really, as it did nothing in that situation before…

  29. Adam Says:

And if you bring up the double-tap controls, the volume slider is replaced by “Dock Connector”

  30. Adam Says:

And it no longer opens the Music app when you just plug it into a radio, it just starts playing (which is MUCH better!)

  31. Lance Says:

I still miss the character counter in SMS.

  32. PeterG Says:

You can now add a new contact from within a phone call by pressing “Contacts” in the options pane and using the new “+” button.

  33. Jeremy Says:

    Hi Andre….

AT&T is not ready for MMS just yet on the iPhone, so while the phone will do it in other countries, it does not work here (I am assuming you’re in the US) :)

  34. Casey Moore Says:

you can now invite attendees to new calendar events on exchange.

  35. Roy Hassard Says:

Too bad that you can only embed 6 photos to an email.

  36. Bahram Dahi Says:

Summary: Excellent support for right-to-left languages (specifically Arabic)

The fonts and font rendering is updated. Arabic words (and words written in similar languages that use Arabic scripture) are now displayed correctly (connected) instead of being shown as a series of uppercase characters (not connected). Upon choosing a right-to-left language (e.g. Arabic) on the keyboard, the environment changes to allow user to type from right to left (e.g. in email, notes, …)

  37. Jordan Says:

I just noticed today that you can press/hold on a photo (in photos) and an option to ‘copy’ appears. ^.^

  38. Amir Says:

The cursor is now blue instead of black

  39. David Singer Says:

Home screen now completely translucent whereas before the areas around the top bar and slide to unlock features were black.

  40. Eric Says:

    Add this to your list:

When docked with the ipod app running, the volume bar disappears from the bottom, leaving room for less error when trying to hit play or skip/previous

  41. Scott Gibbons Says:

I guess Tony loves spending his time navigating through the endless unintuitive lists of features on the Blackberry…truly ridiculous.

  42. Omar Qazi Says:

    Another nice one:

When restoring from backup, apps are restored in the same order that they were previously. (In 2.0, apps would be restored in alphabetical order after syncing them back over.)

  43. AndyB Says:

Also, it displays the operator in the language. China mobile is now written in Chinese

  44. ComSubVie Says:

One “new feature” (in fact I’d see it as bugfix) is that iCal now also syncs calendar colors – the calendars on the iPhone are now in the same color as in iCal.

One bug I found in Spotlight in OS 3.0 is that it still finds *deleted* eMails. If you delete an email and purge it from the trash, spotlight is still able to find it and can display it in Mail.

  45. vern Says:

I don’t know why every little change done is called a “feature”. Why are things that are supposed to be in there or just logical changes called features?

  46. Furi Says:

Don’t know if n e 1 noticed this but I did – used to when u were in notes and u accadentaly brought up the keyboard it would think u had updated the note and it would change the date and reorder it to the top of notes ! NOW u have to actually type something like a space or letter for it to update the note ! 

  47. scott Says:

113 things and not one mention of the built in Nike + Ability? No more little dongle to attach. also, i would think that since the phone can do that, there will be other things that can do that to.

secondly, i’ve noticed that the switch to turn my ringer or off is snappier to, and maybe just maybe moves the tiniest bit further. i can actually be sure now when it’s been toggled.

    thanks for the list.

  48. Kaopattai Says:

You can no longer turn your phone upside down and have the photos turn with it. I used to turn my phone upside down then put it in my mesh organizer on my desk and plug in the charger then set my photos to play. now your photos will only turn landscape which sucks now. i suspect the cord will soon be destroyed by getting bent when i set it in the organizer right side up a hundred time.

  49. Nick Says:

You can also sync 25 calendars with Google Calendar/iPhone built in calendar (using the exchange method) instead of 5.

  50. Mk Says:

Is there any way to group contacts?

  51. admin Says:

yup… try the app called Groups… its awesome, and syncs perfectly with a Mac if you have one…

  52. Sarah Says:

Groups works really well… definately recommend it.
