As we reported for some time, Skype was released today, and it does exactly what it says on the tin, the app is snappy and the call quality is amazing. Mobile Networks around the world are crying…
Signing in is simple and extremely fast.
Desktop users will feel right at home with the iPhone version of Skype, its very intuitive.
Your contacts show up as normal, and the SkypeOut feature to call standard phones also works perfectly, simply deducted credit from your pre-purchased credit on Skype’s website. Calling Skype to Skype is slightly harder because it only works over Wi-Fi, so if you’ve not got your router configured correctly, you may have connection trouble, this is why we need Skype to work on 3G!!!
Skype Chat is an integral feature of the desktop version of Skype, and the iPhone version also features a perfect clone of chat.
We’ve been waiting for this app for almost a year, and Skype have done a fantastic job in implementing it perfectly, however the fact it only works on Wi-Fi is a BIG LET DOWN. The iPhone doesnt allow you to open an app and leave it open, so the ability to not stay online is quite annoying. It would be nice if this Notification feature is implemented when iPhone 3.0 is released, but until then it’s still a great way to talk to people around the world for free, however seeing as you need to be in a wi-fi area, using the desktop app is probably a better more stable choice, uses less battery and allows video chat.
VERDICT: 75%
