Organise your Contacts with Groups

Groups is a handy little app, that allows you to organise your Contacts in to Groups. If you use a Mac you will no doubt already have used groups in your Contacts app on your desktop machine. Groups are a great way of managing your large contact list, but on the iPhone it’s always been a little cumbersome to do so. Now though, with Groups, you can easily drag and drop your friends in to groups, and best of all, this syncs with Mobile Me as well, so any changes to Groups made on your iPhone also reflect on your Mac too.

I’ve been waiting for a Groups functionality for Contacts on the iPhone… I currently use Palm Treo and teh use of Groups saves me incredible amount of time finding or reviewing Contacts… thanks for your info; but what about us who are PC based and use Outlook to sync and backup Contacts??

I'm in the exact same situation…. I LOVE my Treo (650) and haven't changed to the iPhone mostly because of the inability to set up Groups/Categories as I can in the Treo. I have about 800 contacts and the idea of having them in just one big list is not feasible.

I am a PC/Outlook user and sync regularly. Outlook stores my contacts in the categories.

I've heard both theories – one that iPhone has “Groups” and should sync with Outlook (but can't create the group on the phone itself) and second that it's not possible.

Please, please, please… someone tell me exactly how to do it (I'm not super techno savvy).

iPhone has and does support “Groups” and DOES sync with Outlook (but can't create the group on the phone itself). I am a PC user using Outlook 2003 and it does work.

Just get all your contacts in to Outlook, create a new group under “Contacts” (or as many groups as you want to create) move your contacts in tot he appropriate group, and sync. You can even (through iTunes) select where new contacts added on the iPhone should sync to in Outlook

Outlook approach that I just used:
    1) from Outlook (I’m 2007) File –> Folder –> New Folder…
    2) Give name, Folder contains: (select “Contact Items”), Select where to place the folder: (I put the new folder into the Contacts – inother words select “Contacts” – You may be able to have them directly under the mailbox)

that’s it. Start adding names to the New folder.

I really like the Grouping capabilities but when will bulk sms be available? I am a soccer coach and i can’t send a text to 14 kids? i hope this gets resolved soon. Otherwise very ease to use and great interface…

great–a “solution” that requires Outlook or Mac Address Book, but can’t actually be done on the iPhone itself.

How about sending one email to a whole group? I have groups defined on Yahoo, but can’t invoke them from the iPhone native mail app (which only sees Contacts) or from the Yahoo mail app (which is uselessly redundant).
