A lot of 3 customers have asked us where are the APN settings to enable access to Planet 3 on the iPhone 3G.
Well, there is a lot of confusion over this matter, because different networks have ‘removed/hidden’ it on 2.0 software. Basically, on most networks, it’s not needed, due to the fact that the APN data is stored on the SIM itself, which allows for fast SIM swapping on unlocked iPhone 3G’s. However, 3 is a different story. The APN data enables personalised access to your account through Planet 3 directly from your handset.
From our research it would seem that some purchased iPhone 3G’s WILL enable you to edit your APN settings and others WONT. Vodafone AU and NZ appear to have locked that feature out, whereas Telstra allows you to edit your APN even when it’s not unlocked from the Telstra network.
So, for now, see if it’s possible to edit the APN settings on the iPhone 3G in the following way:
Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network -> APN
If you can, then you will be able to edit the APN after you’ve unlocked your iPhone 3G. If you’ve already bought an iPhone 3G and can’t edit your APN settings, then you need to visit this website and unlock it manually.

I purchased a iPhone in New Zealand with no contract from Vodafone NZ as they are unlocked. Initially the guy in the store said the APN was locked out meaning no data connection when I took it back to Thailand. However it was a load of baloney and I can access the APN settings no problem and all works perfectly, no unlocking just got the phone and popped in my Thai SIM card! Rock n Roll!

This is really cool – but any thoughts on how to go in and set the operator DNS? I see how the APN settings will get changed with the cool tool but not the DNS.

Any idea how to have *both* tethering and voicemail work on AT&T in the US? With this setup, it's only one or the other unfortunately (common on all the enable tethering methods I've seen so far).

For tethering, I suggest you use PdaNet from Cydia on AT&T in the US. It works on my 3gs phone. You can get video instructions on how to configure PdaNet with your computer by wifi or usb on Youtube.

Forgot to mention that voicemail works with tethering using the PdaNet method. You have to have a jailbroken phone and have Cydia installed.

Ah, I was hopeful until I saw your comment about needing to have a jailbroken phone and Cydia installed. Anyone see a solution out there without jail breaking?

If I use the unlock.co.nz application, it works. But I need an internet connection (wifi) for the app to run. And I need to run this app every time I switch over to a new SIM card. Is there any way to get an app that is resident in the iPhone instead of having to go online to change the APN settings? The reason for needing to change the APN settings is to have internet without wifi, but it seems to me that we'll need to have wifi BEFORE we can get the 3G internet to work.

Hi Nick, Some carrier settings block out the cellular data tab.
Restore your phone and unlock without updating carrier settings.
You should now be able to enter the carrier settings manually
