Apple iPhone 3G, Apps, GPS / Sat Nav

Today we took the iPhone 3G out on the road, to test the GPS with google maps. In this test we genuinely needed the GPS as we had no idea where we were heading.

We set the maps to satellite view so we could see landmarks to aid navigation.

We connected to a mobile 3G network using Optus and had strong signal for most of the journey however even at 40 or 50kph the iPhone couldn’t stream the maps in quick enough which meant we kept having to stop and let the iPhone load more maps before proceeding on.

The GPS on the iPhone gets a lock faster than any other portable satnav device we’ve tried, but after testing it with google maps, our conclusion is that for sat navigation on the iphone to work well, someone like tom tom will have to release software that stores all the maps locally on the iPhone so you won’t need to rely on the 3G connection for the maps.

VERDICT: 75% – great for pedestrians
